Francesca Grilli

Francesca Grilli works mainly with photography, video and most recently with performance. Her artistic practice draws inspiration from the life and the memory of her family and from the appropriation of an alternative space and time to the one offered to us by ordinary reality.

A series of interviews recorded with her relatives signals the beginning of a path of self- discovery. Starting from the video 194.9 Mhz (2006), where the climbing of a mountain is the pretext to talk about her father, Franco and a history buried in the past.

The video-installation Arriverà e ci coglierà di sorpresa (2006), animated by the prolonged dance of a couple of 75-year-old in the semi-darkness, just in front of the projection of an empty dancing hall, obtained the second prize at the Trento’s Performance Festival. The piece is a sublime take on the flowing of time, and gives us a taste of life and its pleasures, keeping at a distance- even if just temporarily- the thought of death.

In Enduring Midnight, the memory of the opera, so beloved by grandma Fedora, inspires the interpretation of soprano Lina Vasta, in the middle of the night. Up until Gordon, a video realized in 16 mm in 2007, who tells the story of her grandfather Giordano Bruno, 87 years old, called Gordon during his youth, and his relationship with his niece, employing the metaphor of bowling.

The strength and the sweetness of Francesca Grilli’s poetic language lies in the ability to master the technical elements and in the accuracy of the results but also in the power of a gesture, in arising feelings as in giving an hug, her gift to the city of Milan. as her contribution to Talk to the city in a poster in via Procaccini.
