Within the context of the Live Works Summit 2024, Centrale Fies launches the second episode of a trilogy of performative exhibitions (2023-2025), curated by Barbara Boninsegna and Simone Frangi, dedicated to the concepts expressed in the theoretical work of neo-
materialist feminist thinker Stacy Alaimo. Following the first episode in 2023, which focused on the notion of the “naked word”, this
year the idea of the “material self” will be investigated. This is a concept that Alaimo examined in her 2010 book “Bodily Natures: Science, Environment, and the Material Self”, framing the action and meaning of “material forces” and their interfaces with human bodies. The exhibition seeks to answer the same questions which Alaimo poses in her post-anthropocentric thinking, which is critical of the superb exceptionalism of humans: what does it mean to “be human” with bodies that are inextricably interconnected with the physical world? How does the human body react to powerful and pervasive material forces and register their increasingly damaging effects? Material Self suggests that the “new” relationship between bodies and nature has profoundly altered our sense of self, creating an unprecedented proximity of the human body to the environment and a renewed relational understanding of the concepts of “home”, “shelter” and “inhabiting the world”.

Pensare a fatica. Sognare (quasi) canali e campi seminati. Scalare montagne, ma non è vero. Essere incollate al suolo. Sentire dolore perché loro sentono dolore. Seppellire i morti viventi.

Geology and romance have one thing in common: they tell the story that things last a long time. The absurd hypothesis of an asteroid that would lead to the instant extinction of all dinosaurs shocked the scientific community in the 1980s: no one could accept a story that was so terribly fascinating but at the same time too improbable. The same incredulity of those who suddenly find themselves without a lover: it is difficult to accept that life can change direction so suddenly and cruelly.
In Marco D’Agostin’s new show, the figure of a mysterious palaeontologist presents himself to the audience to discuss bones, extinctions and cosmic material. It soon becomes clear that something is not right: his phrases reveal sentimental details, the posture of a limb takes on a bizarre choreographic pose, the pronunciation of words increasingly resembles singing. A threat looms over the scientist’s body, as terrifying as the trajectory of an asteroid: it is the musical, the most paradoxical and exhausting form of entertainment, which seems to want to destroy the lecture in order to test the ability to dance and sing the tale of the end.
In a hand-to-hand battle with Broadway, D’Agostin’s populariser/performer gives life to an unprecedented duet that pairs science and love, entertainment and information, life and death, dance and theatre. Between betrayals, dinosaur bones and mysterious caves full of iridium, Asteroid recounts the extraordinary capacity of life – and therefore of art – to always reappear, in new forms, without ever giving up. And we living beings, continually called upon to rebuild ourselves after apocalypses – which in a vertiginous reversal D’Agostin invites us to observe as if they were always behind us – are proof that we build ourselves up layer by layer, like the fabric of the earth, and that our biographies are small geological eras destined to leave something behind.

Marco D’Agostin is the winner of the 2018 UBU Award for Best Performer Under 35 and the 2023 UBU Award for Best Dance Performance (The Years). In 2023 he was awarded the 4th Riccione Special Prize for dramaturgical innovation. He is an associate artist of the Piccolo Teatro in Milan. His works question the functioning of memory, giving life to choreographic devices that starting from personal or collective archives seek to trigger with the audience practices of participation and identification. He has studied entertainment as a form of a specific relationship between performer and spectator, taking its shadowy areas and failures as sites of luminous revelations. His dance, a complex geography in which sounds, words and movements continually collide, always tends toward the emotional compromise of the performer and the spectator. After training with internationally renowned masters (Yasmeen Godder, Nigel Charnock, Emio Greco), he danced as a performer for Claudia Castellucci/Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio, Alessandro Sciarroni, Liz Santoro, Tabea Martin. Since 2010, he has been taking part in international choreographic research projects (ChoreoRoam Europe, Act Your Age, Triptych). He has twice been among the Priority Companies of the European network Aerowaves. He has been hosted in the main European festivals and theaters (Théâtre de La Ville and Théâtre Chaillot – Paris, Festival d’Avignon, Kampnagel – Hamburg, Les Brigittines – Brussels, The Place Theatre – London, Julidans – Amsterdam, Santarcangelo, Romaeuropa, Torinodanza, OperaEstate, to name a few) and has presented his shows in many prestigious overseas contexts (Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile, São Paulo). As of 2019, he is one of the twenty dancers in Boris Charmartz’ XX Dancers for the 20th century project, for which he interprets the Schuhplattler repertoire from A. Sciarroni’s Folk-s show. In 2020 he was invited by Marie Chouinard, director of the Biennale Danza, to make a new creation for Biennale College, while in 2023 he created OKOKOK, commissioned by Paolo Mangiola for the Maltese national company ZfinMalta. He co-curated Centrale Fies’ programmatic Thank you for coming and Ogni volta unica la fine del mondo, Piccolo Teatro of Milan’s 2021 summer season. In 2024, Years, Letters and Avalanches, a volume co-written with Alessandro Iachino on his dramaturgies for dance, was published by Il Saggiatore. Marco D’Agostin is one of the founders of VAN, a dance production organization recognized and supported by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities since 2015. He was also the male lead in Marco Righi’s award-winning film Days of harvest (special mention of the jury at Rencontres du Cinéma Italien de Grenoble, 2011).

At the intersection of dance, performance and theatre, BROMIO unfolds a poetic trance ritual. A group of individuals embarks on a quest for states of consciousness that allow them to escape from the social fabric of ordinariness in which they live. BROMIO is the possibility of an encounter with the Other in us and around us.It is an invitation to an urban society to meet itself and experience community again. There where individual and collective memories meet half-hidden. The ambition of the group is to see the different forms of its practice recognised and, perhaps, exercised by many, by the whole community. The victorious irruption of Bromio means that otherness is installed with all honours, albeit in its transitory and ephemeral form, at the centre of the social device.

Anagoor is structured as a collective experiment where, under the direction of Simone Derai and Marco Menegoni, the presence of Patrizia Vercesi, Mauro Martinuz, and Giulio Favotto is complemented by other artists who continually join the group, enriching the journey and emphasising its cooperative nature. Anagoor’s theatre adheres to an iconic aesthetic where performing arts, philosophy, literature, and a hypermedia approach to the stage engage in dialogue, firmly claiming their place within the realm of theatre.

Elena Rivoltini è performer, sound artist e curatrice.

Elena Rivoltini shares her ongoing research on voice, ecstasy, and perception in the form of a studio visit. Starting from a feminist, embodied, and intersectional perspective, the project reflects on the possibilities of generating new bodily imaginaries through a practice of field recording of the inner anatomical landscape and collective listening. A concert for organs, a pulmonary glossolalia, a subverted anatomy lesson, a rebellion against the medicalization practices of female and marginalized bodies.

Elena Rivoltini is a performer, sound artist, and curator. She graduated from the Piccolo Teatro Academy in Milan and studied Renaissance and Baroque singing, specializing in ancient vocal polyphony and electronic music. She investigates voice, breathing and proprioception enacting a queer mode of critique that demands a retraining of our vision and a reconnection with our senses.
She debuted as a performer for Bob Wilson and has worked with theaters, museums, and artistic institutions such as the Venice Biennale Music and Theater, Piccolo Teatro di Milano, ERT, Teatro India and Argentina in Rome, Triennale Milano, Teatro Franco Parenti, LAC Lugano, Festival Catalysi-Societas Raffaello Sanzio, and Théâtre National Wallonie-Bruxelles. She speaks five languages and curates an archive of endangered voices and glossolalia.

Altre performance come “Concluded without Agreement” (2021) o “Hasta las Piedras Lo Saben” (2021) sono state presentate in istituzioni culturali come Veem House for Performance (Amsterdam, NL, 2021), Van Abbemuseum (Eindhoven NL, 2021), Het Nieuwe Instituut (Rotterdam, NL, 2021), Matadero (Madrid, ES, 2022), Centre d’Art Santa Monica (Barcellona, ES, 2022), Noorderlicht (Groninguen, NL, 2021). È stato selezionato per residenze internazionali come il Centro de Residencias Trimestrales Matadero (Madrid, 2023) e la Live Works-Free School of Performance presso Centrale Fies (Dro, IT, 2021).

No Pares (sigue, sigue) [Don’t Stop (Keep going, keep going)] explores the violences hidden behind the productive forces of neoliberal desire, revealing the guilt, self-punishment, and dissatisfaction that inhabit the new logics of productivity and self-realization inherent in hedonic capitalism.
Situated between a spinning class and a performative lecture, the piece presents itself as a modern Sisyphus trapped in incessant pedaling, a performance looping endlessly in an attempt to surpass itself. With an euphoric tone and merengue house music in the background, the audience is slowly seduced into becoming part of this self-exploitative delirium.
Beyond highlighting the incompatibility of neoliberal temporalities and narratives on our bodies, the performance proposes resistance strategies that allow us to break with the inertia of neoliberal productivity and its mechanisms of seduction.
No Pares (sigue, sigue) explores sleeping and dreaming as spaces of pause where nothing is produced or consumed, a bastion where we can imagine new systems and strategies that collectively enable us to unite forces to break the inertia and stop.

Nel 2022 è uscito il libro ‘Ritual and Display’ che ha curato per If I Can’t Dance, I Don’t Want to be Part of Your Revolution (Amsterdam).

Heart Brake is a performance for three womxn. It bears witness to how a feeling can be a character and a place we live in, peaking into the crevice of the breaking heart. In this work-in-progress Giulia Damiani invites Luísa Saraiva to find and articulate the voice of the main character, historically a folk figure silenced by patriarchal violence. The two explore the physicality of vocal registers beyond gender binaries while embodying the sounding and imagery of rock-splitting. Stricken, different kinds of bodies vibrate. They rework the folk singing traditions surrounding this ancient profession revealing disruptive narratives registered in orality. The choreographic score emerges in the movement between breath, voice and song; signalling the anxiety and worry that are experienced in the path to setting oneself, and each other, free.

Pensare a fatica. Sognare (quasi) canali e campi seminati. Scalare montagne, ma non è vero. Essere incollate al suolo. Sentire dolore perché loro sentono dolore. Seppellire i morti viventi.

Codesto solo oggi posso dirti,

To buzz with fatigue. To dream (almost) of canals and planted fields. To climb mountains, but it’s not true. To be glued to the ground. To hurt because they are hurting. To bury the living-dead. To lower one’s mask. To clean the bath-tub with disgust. To feel guilty and blame it on the war. To be puzzled by the enormity of what is happening. To live in a kind of luxury, avoid the idea that it could be different. To wait for the end of that which will not end.
Etel Adnan

Don’t ask us for that formula that opens worlds,
just a few twisted syllables, dry as a branch and gaunt.
Today the only thing that we can tell you is
what we are not, and what we do not want.
Eugenio Montale

To inhabit the Forgia as the place of the not-yet, of reparation and becoming.
As a space for struggle and desire in between must-give/take-shape, and the refusal of such obligations.
To find in this tension a memory of a previous palpitation, an ancient parent of a constant making and undoing, precisely in the very nature of the world.
Feeling in this house of the not-yet—soldered in the robust embrace between the Marocche and the incessant flight of the Sarca—the volume of a possible disobedience distill at the tight boundaries of definitions.

We are a pearl necklace that has been cut; the pearls have bounced all over the place.

Perle sparse/ Perle fanné par tous is an installation about the theme of travel and the feeling of coming back to one’s country of origin.
A journey from Mauritius to Europe and from Europe to Mauritius. In this installation the viewer will find a multimedia and imaginary geographical map, a narrative, and sensorial journey between memories trough two video screenings and thoughts about what we carry with us when we are migrating.
In this work the fundamental element is water, which is associated to the movement of the diaspora. Vashish Soobah was born in Catania in 1994 to Mauritian parents. In his country of origin he has a fixed image in his memory: a huge field of sugar cane that opens up in front of his grandmother’s house. The plantations recall the violent context about slavery that imprisoned Mauritius for centuries, but also a glue that binds the diaspora: séga music.

Vashish Soobah (1994) is a visual arBst, filmmaker and documentary filmmaker born in Sicily to MauriBan parents who grew up in Brianza.

He graduated in media design and multimedia arts at Naba in 2018 and later earned a master’s degree in Moving image & artist’s film at Goldsmiths, University of London in 2019.
In the construction of his works he always starts from his condition of in-between, being in the middle between two cultures, the Italian and the Mauritian.
His practice focuses on the concept of memory and migration, the meaning of home and identity, spirituality and issues related to the Mauritian diaspora through biographical and personal narratives.
Another fundamental element that he retraces in his practice is to rework the images and videos that come from the family archive.
In addition to the languages related to the moving image, his research is characterized by a deep interest in musical experimentation, he collaborates with Raheem radio with a monthly show focused on mapping the Mauritian diaspora around the world.
He explores others media such as photography, screen printing and in the last period is using the technique of embroidery on fabrics influenced by his office work at a fashion brand.
His works were exhibited at MA*GA in Gallarate (2022), Almanac Inn in Turin (2022), Marsel in Milan (2021), Oberdan space (2017) and published by magazines such as EX NUNC; i-d VICE, Il POST and Perimeter.
On the occasion of the 28th edition FESCAAAL in 2017 presented the documentary “Nanì” that traces the history of his family through the eyes of his grandmother, starting from a personal research and then expanding to the entire Mauritian cultural heritage.

The Sun Eaters, the permanent political body of the Interspecies Diplomacies, announce their invitation to celebrate the multi-decade anniversary of the first Planetary Metabolic Convention. An institutional ceremony will be held for the occasion, during which guests may renew their commitment to the agreement that binds every metabolic system on Earth to all others.
Within Evolving Love Mali Weil proposes an exploration, in the form of a political-legal study, into her own research around the concept of interspecies diplomacies, a first step in the world-building process for the prototyping of a planetary metabolic institution.

Mali Weil is an artistic platform established by Elisa Di Liberato, Lorenzo Facchinelli and Mara Ferrieri, based in Trentino Alto Adige-Suedtirol (IT). Through a layered and expanded practice, she develops a performative research that investigates the spaces and modes of disclosure of political imagination, on ecological and political issues, but also on the role and responsibility of individuals in social and urban space. Her visual production ranges from performance to product and speculative design, from editorial to film, but she also works through curatorial projects and workshops, creating open and itinerant schools, participatory and relational set-ups, platforms for discussion and exchange.

Mali Weil is the author of the book The shining reverie of unruly objects (Bruno, Venice 2020), a narrative essay that reflects on the relationships between objects, narratives and performance.
Her current research project The Mountain of Advanced Dreams (Italian Council X winner) critically explores the concept of interspecies diplomacies. Mali Weil collaborates permanently with the Art Work Space Centrale Fies and is the creator and curator of the Like Life platform for MUSE – Science Museum of Trento, which since 2021 has been investigating relations with the living, crossing the gazes of science, design, philosophy and fiction through curated programmes, workshops, visual and design productions and public conversations both online and inside the museum.

The <age> project left an indelible mark on the theatre scene, on the history of CollettivO CineticO itself and on all the young people who took part in it. Young individuals, aged between 14 and 19, reveal themselves on stage.  They enter the stage without knowing what is going to happen, they tell their stories, they define themselves without coming to a complete conclusion, dealing with the iridescent matter that is reality.  What emerges is not only an incadescent portrait of a sample of humanity, but also a litmus test of our present, with its extremes and its cracks, its contradictions and its burning poetry.  The <age> project was first created in 2012 and its protagonists are now adults.
In 2024 there will be a new <age> and we can’t wait to see it
