THE NAKED WORD

The Naked Word prende il titolo dal saggio The naked word: The Trans-corporeal ethics of the protesting body scritto nel 2010 dalla teorica femminista materialista Stacy Alaimo, nel tentativo di comprendere, incrociando prospettive post-umane e performance studies, in che modo li “corpo nudo” funzioni nell’ambito di eventi di protesta legati alla giustizia ambientale, al diritto alla salute e alle politiche queer.

Per Alaimo, la nudità del corpo umano esposto in protestaè leg- gibile come “una performance etica della vulnerabilità- la vulnerabilità alleata e reciproca di uomo/animale/ambiente”: è infatti in questo senso che Alaimo riprende nel saggio il termine “trans-corporeita”, che lei stessa creò per enfatizzare la correlazione dei corpi umani non solo tra loro, ma anche con creature non umane e con altri paesaggi fisici. L’umano è dunque, nel suo linguaggio nudo, un materiale carnale come (e legato, s e non in debito con) molte altre carni. In questo spazio di riflessione etico-politica, artiste ed artisti internazionali incrociano i propri sguardi, riformulando l’idea di interdipendenza carnale e le possibilità di protesta e insurrezione trans-corporea.

The Naked Word takes its title from the essay The naked word: The trans-corporeal ethics of the protesting body, written in 2010 by feminist materialist theorist Stacy Alaimo. In this essay, Alaimo seeks to understand, by intersecting post-human perspectives and performance studies, how the “naked body” functions within protest events related to environmental justice, the right to health, and queer politics. According to Alaimo, the nudity of the human body exposed in protest can be interpreted as “an ethical performance of vulne- rability-the allied and reciprocal vulnerability of human/ani- mal/environment.”It is in this sense that Alaimo reintroduces the term “trans-corporeality” in the essay, which she herself coined to emphasize the correlation of human bodies not only with each other but also with non-human creatures and other physical landscapes. In her language of nudity, the human is thus a fleshy material, akin to and connected, if not indebted, to many other forms of flesh. In this space of ethical and political reflection, international artists come together, reshaping the idea of carnal interdependence and the possibilities of trans-corporeal protest and insurrection.
