Marina Cuollo e Moshtari Hilal in conversazione con Tiziana Triana e Lavinia Azzone + ÀO LÌ WǍ
Il terzo appuntamento di “Witches / brand new self” segna una nuova collaborazione con Tiziana Triana, direttrice editoriale di Fandango Libri, impegnata nella saggistica e nella fiction narrativa. Nato come un raduno di pratiche, “Witches / brand new self” è un format che intreccia workshop, co-learning e programmi pubblici. Al centro non è centrale la “strega” come tema in senso stretto, quanto piuttosto una linea nera concettuale, un filo che unisce tutte le soggettività coinvolte – artiste, ricercatrici, performer, designer, autrici – chiamate a raccontare il proprio lavoro attraverso uno sguardo transfemminista e processuale, aperto alla contaminazione tra saperi e linguaggi. La “strega”, in questo contesto, è un simbolo mobile da decostruire, o al contrario un pretesto attivo per attivare narrazioni, attraversamenti e genealogie critiche contemporanee. Dal peso di un’eterodefinizione negativa della nozione di strega alla forza di un’autodefinizione come atto di riposizionamento: è qui che prende forma brand new self.
Lo spin-off editoriale “Witches / brand new self FEAT. Fandango Libri” vedrà la partecipazione delle autrici Marina Cuollo e Moshtari Hilal, che dialogheranno con Tiziana Triana, direttrice di Fandango Libri e con la traduttrice di Hilal, Lavinia Azzone. Questo incontro rappresenta un ulteriore passo nella diffusione delle pratiche e delle idee emerse durante “Witches / brand new self”, ampliando il dibattito e coinvolgendo nuove voci nel processo di risemantizzazione e trasformazione culturale.
ÀO LÌ WǍ è un quintetto che utilizza voce naturale ed effettata (Vanessa Icareg), lira calabrese (Alma Malara), daf e gong (Alessia Tantillo), chitarra classica (Matteo Nobile) e mandolino (Stefano Carniato) per generare delle sonorità vicine alla musica avant-folk, alternando spazi improvvisativi a canzoni strutturate. Le melodie e i ritmi tipici delle musiche popolari vengono rielaborati attraverso arrangiamenti originali e un uso non convenzionale degli strumenti. Il risultato è una tessitura sonora ipnotica che intreccia elementi acustici, percussivi ed effetti elettronici. Il gruppo si configura come un laboratorio aperto, dove la sperimentazione è al centro e ogni performance rappresenta un’occasione per esplorare nuove possibilità espressive.
The third edition of WITCHES / BRAND NEW SELF marks a new collaboration with Tiziana Triana, editorial director at Fandango Libri, who works in both non-fiction and narrative fiction.
Originally conceived as a gathering of practices, “Witches / brand new self” is a format that weaves together workshops, co-learning, and public programming. The focus is not strictly on the “witch” as a central theme, but rather on a conceptual black thread — a line that connects all the subjectivities involved: artists, researchers, performers, designers, writers — all invited to share their work through a transfeminist and process-based lens, open to the blending of knowledge and languages. In this context, the “witch” is a mutable symbol to be deconstructed, or conversely, an active pretext to spark new narratives, intersections, and contemporary critical genealogies. From the burden of a hetero-defined, negative notion of the witch to the power of self-definition as an act of repositioning — this is where brand new self takes shape.
The editorial spin-off, “Witches / brand new self FEAT. Fandango Libri”, will feature authors Marina Cuollo and Moshtari Hilal, in conversation with Tiziana Triana, director of Fandango Libri, and Hilal’s translator, Lavinia Azzone. This event represents a further step in the dissemination of the practices and ideas that emerged during “Witches / brand new self”, broadening the debate and engaging new voices in a process of resemanticization and cultural transformation.
ÀO LÌ WǍ is a quintet that uses natural and processed voice (Vanessa Icareg), Calabrian lyre (Alma Malara), daf and gong (Alessia Tantillo), classical guitar (Matteo Nobile), and mandolin (Stefano Carniato) to create a sound that draws from avant-folk music, alternating between improvisational moments and structured songs. Traditional folk melodies and rhythms are reworked through original arrangements and an unconventional use of instruments. The result is a hypnotic sound texture that weaves together acoustic, percussive, and electronic elements. The group operates as an open laboratory, where experimentation takes center stage and every performance becomes an opportunity to explore new expressive possibilities.
