LIVE WORKS SUMMIT is Centrale Fies’ Free School of Performance, an international platform and scouting tool of the research centre for the past fourteen years, curated by Simone Frangi and Barbara Boninsegna. Dedicated to contemporary performance art, it begins from practices rooted in the visual arts and expands into the borderlands between performance, research, activism, and interdisciplinary experimentation, embracing its most hybrid, experimental, and political forms. Through an international open call, projects are selected for the strength and urgency of their research trajectories, based on project proposals, artists’ portfolios, and statements. Selected artists then move on to a second stage involving two extended residency periods at Centrale Fies, alongside a network of partner residencies in Berlin (Tanzfabrik Berlin), Barcelona (Hangar), and Bassano del Grappa (Operaestate Festival Veneto). Within this shared and constantly evolving research environment, the Agitu Ideo Gudeta Fellowship further supports artists participating in the Free School. Curated by Simone Frangi and Barbara Boninsegna together with Mackda Ghebremariam Tesfau’ and Justin Randolph Thompson, the fellowship is conceived as a form of affirmative action. Developed in collaboration with Palazzo Grassi – Pinault Collection and Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, it acknowledges that the lack of diversity within the arts is often connected to concrete material and symbolic barriers, particularly those produced through processes of racialization. Among the Free School of Performance’s key objectives is the commitment to deepening and expanding the very notion of performance itself.

In this new project by Centrale Fies, supported through the Laboratorio di Creatività Contemporanea public grant, the relationship between art and territory is questioned, unsettled, and reimagined, bringing unexpected tensions and possibilities to the surface. It is a practice that Centrale Fies has long kept alive—concrete, situated, and at times uncomfortable and counterintuitive. For us, territory has never been something to work on, a backdrop or a frame for identities to be represented, nor an origin to be preserved. Rather, it is a material composed of bodies arriving and departing, of unresolved histories, of landscapes that demand to be questioned. Territory is a space to be crossed, exposed to the risk of imagination. From this perspective, art is not a tool for narrating places but for making them less obvious, freeing them from the rhetoric of “valorisation” and opening them up to new questions. The notion of belonging therefore gives way to that of responsibility—a shared responsibility that has always required, and still requires, listening, conflict, care, and long-term commitment. Against the idea of territory as a “given community,” we propose instead a space of continuous negotiation among artistic practices, local economies, cultural policies, and individual and collective desires. Here, art becomes a device that circulates knowledge, reveals asymmetries, and accepts its own impossibility of neutrality. The work lies in taking the risk of positioning oneself, knowing that every position produces real effects, even when those effects are not immediately measurable. THE SPARKS RETURN is a new project about alliances and about a vision of culture that does not colonise but co-designs; one that refuses simplifications, brings complexities to the surface, and does not merely seek inclusion but allows itself to be transformed by every encounter. The method we embrace involves inhabiting the margins, working with what remains untamed and in constant motion, and imagining territory as an open field of possibilities. At a time when cultural institutions are increasingly expected to be efficient, recognisable, and performative, with THE SPARKS RETURN Centrale Fies continues to practice a form of resistance that is both radical and gentle: the resistance of those who believe that art, when it truly encounters a territory, makes it more difficult to possess—and therefore more free.
LOVE IS POLITICAL: 23-26.07.2026

LOVE IS POLITICAL nasce da qui.
We used to look for politics in the halls of power and at the ballot box, whenever a law was passed or a conflict emerged on the public stage. Yet in recent years we have come to understand something different: relationships are the first political territory we inhabit. It is within them that we learn how to live with difference, negotiate our limits, and confront questions of power and responsibility. It is difficult to imagine more just worlds if we are unwilling to examine the ways we inhabit our bonds of love, friendship, and alliance. What happens between a few people never remains confined to that space alone. It leaves traces, generates possibilities, and anticipates forms of coexistence that will sooner or later find their place in the shared world—for better or for worse. This is a quieter form of politics, one that takes shape every day in the relationships we choose not to abandon to inertia. It resides in the work required to remain alongside what is changing, even when it shifts direction and compels us to change with it. It often reveals itself in the capacity to welcome what does not resemble us, to make room for desires and differences, as well as for transformations we cannot entirely control. LOVE IS POLITICAL begins here. Following Enduring Love, Evolving Love, and Radical Love, Centrale Fies dedicates this new edition to relationships as a force capable of producing reality, of world-making. Every relationship contains a vision of collective existence; it suggests who we are, what we might become, and which futures we are able to imagine together. For this reason, LOVE IS POLITICAL looks at relationships as they evolve over time through personal and collective transformations. It turns its attention to the bonds that connect artists, curators, audiences, and territories, bringing artistic research into dialogue with everyday life, and imagination into conversation with what we are called upon to build. These relationships are sustained by listening, mutual transformation, and shared responsibility. Their value lies in their ability to change form without ceasing to generate trust and new possibilities. For years, Centrale Fies has accompanied artistic trajectories that now move across major national and international contexts. Some of these artists and companies return to present their most recent works, carrying with them the traces of a shared history. Alongside them, new researchers and practitioners—with whom alliances and open-ended possibilities are currently being forged—will conduct live research during the public programme, opening their processes to encounters and questions that belong as much to artistic inquiry as to the lives that pass through it. LOVE IS POLITICAL is dedicated to these uneven continuities. Because every act of care is also an act of political imagination, and every time we choose to sustain a relationship rather than consume it or fear it, we are already exercising a different idea of the world. We dedicate this 2026 edition to all those bonds that generate transformation: to friendships, alliances, complicities, and loves that continue, quietly yet persistently, to reshape reality.
